RESEARCH QUESTION

This project is the result of a partnership between IVASS, Institute for Insurance Supervision, BVA-Doxa, Institute for Statistical Research and University of Milan-Bicocca, Department of Economics and Psychology. The objective is the elaboration of a questionnaire that evaluates the skills of Italians in insurance matters. The activity is financed by the Ministry of Economic Development, and is part of the initiatives organized for the benefit of consumers. The construction of the test required two phases, the first qualitative, through focus groups and targeted interviews with consumers and employees in the insurance sector, followed by the data processing phase aimed at defining the questionnaire. A cognitive-behavioural and psychometric methodological path was followed, which allowed to predict insurance behavior and provided the basis for the identification of the most effective strategies to promote insurance culture.

THEORETICAL AND PRACTICAL CONTRIBUTION

Through this project, it has been possible to develop a measure of Italians' insurance skills and specifically their awareness of the risks to which they are exposed, their knowledge of the products provided by the insurance market and their ability to choose them according to their needs. This evaluation will be the basis for the implementation of literacy courses throughout the national territory thanks to which citizens will become more responsible and attentive clients.
